In the Susan Stein Shiva Theater
By Hamish Linklater
Directed by Leigh Silverman
1944, Nazi-occupied Paris. "The Merchant of Venice," starring real life Nazi stage and screen celebrity Werner Krauss ("The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari," "Jud Süs," "Paracelsus," et al), as the Jew. Paris, Actors is a family farce set in a theater, set in a nation, under the thumb of a totalitarian dictatorship - (sound familiar?) which wants to ask you, how do you solve a crime against humanity? What is an artist in war? Is there such a thing as an artist without war? How do you forgive the unforgivable? And how much strain can the quality of mercy truly take?
